Just a random thought, but if you could somehow sneak an 80-column chip into the design, then what you would end up with is the _Ultimate Commodore Machine_. There probably wouldn't be a need to design a new accelerator for the C128, since all that the C128 would have over the accelerated C64 would be an 80-column chip and more keys on the keyboard. Granted, existing software wouldn't be able to use it (unless it worked the same as the C128's 80-column chip when in C64 more), but existing software also couldn't use the 16-bit mode of the 65816 or the >64K memory ("in for a penny...").
